OVERCOMERS

Our world is in utter chaos as the threat of COVID-19 is steadily increasing as the year fades into the winter months. The number of hospitalizations and deaths is rapidly increasing with no cure in sight. This pandemic has caused so much strife within our country and the added tension resulting from the current political election is just adding to the negative pressures. It seems as if the darkness is continually increasing as the light is dwindling away. 2020 has been full of many unwelcome surprises and everyone is seeking to remove the harsh pressures piled on America’s back.

In a time like this, Christians need to be stepping up, but instead we are hiding in the shadows. Most people are looking forward to end 2020 and start fresh in 2021. We have the mindset if we can find a way to remove this disease, then everything will be back to normal. We think if we remove our current President then all the problems will just magically fade away. But this removal mindset is where we are going wrong.

First and foremost, we have to realize we are not in control. All of the obstacles being thrown in our way, whether it’s deciding who the President of our country is going to be or a struggling friendship: God is in control. It is not our job to remove these obstacles. This is where we have to change our mindset. Now is the time for a transformation. Now is the time for a cultural reset. Now is the time to be overcomers.

In Genesis 5, God saw how corrupt the world had become and he wanted to completely destroy the human race and their sin by flooding the land. However, Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord, so God made a covenant with him to protect his family as the flood waters destroyed the face of the earth. However, God’s attempt to decimate the human race and start fresh did not fix the problem. Removing the human race did not keep them from sinning.

Then God’s perfect plan came into place.

Jesus was sent to this earth to save us from our sins and he did just that. He made a way for us to enter the Kingdom of Heaven and live forever with our Father. Did he do this by trying to remove sin? No. He was able to save us by dying on the cross. Jesus is the true definition of an overcomer and is our ultimate role model in trying times like these.

In Matthew, Satan tests Jesus by tempting him to turn stones to bread where Jesus replies, “Human beings cannot live on bread alone, but need every word God speaks.” He tempts Jesus again by telling him to throw himself off the highest point of the temple for the angels to catch him. Then Jesus replies, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” Finally, the Devil offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in return for worshipping him. Jesus replies, “Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!”

In all of these situations Jesus could have easily removed the Devil from his presence, but instead he was able to overcome the Devil using scripture.

Now we have to use this same approach if we want our world to ever escape this dark cycle of political strife and tension. Just as removing the human race by flood to destroy sin did not work, removing the problems of 2020 will not fix anything. We have to use Jesus as an example, and overcome the world by spreading God’s love and backing up everything in scripture and prayer.

But the real question is how do we become overcomers? How do we seek to build the Kingdom of God instead of focusing on removing the bad things in our lives.

  1. USE THE MOMENT YOU ARE IN FOR THE GLORY OF GOD

-do not try to rush anything, but instead use the moment you are in to glorify the Lord!

-use negative circumstances to glorify God. Find the good in everything!

2. ADD SCRIPTURE AND PRAYER INTO YOUR LIFE

-read your bible daily and store it in your heart for when you are tested!

-pray for those who persecute you!

Yes, our world may be in utter chaos and yes 2020 has been full of countless negative pressures, but we have to make a choice as Christians today. We have to make the choice to stop trying remove the obstacles in our lives and start overcoming the obstacles.
